
Penn State Altoona student-athlete Gabriel Lopez, of Wilmette, IL, was named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference’s Player of the Week in men’s tennis on Tuesday, Feb. 25.
NORTH BOSTON, N.Y. — Penn State Altoona men’s basketball forward Dwayne Jones, of Philadelphia, and guard Kal-El Gentles, of Austin, Texas, each received a pair of postseason awards from the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference, as the league office released its All-Conference team on Tuesday, March 4.
Jones was voted the AMCC’s Defensive Player of the Year for the third season in a row while also being selected to the first team of the All-Conference squad. Gentles earned AMCC Newcomer of the Year status and was also a third-team All-Conference pick.
Jones finished his standout collegiate career with a strong year, putting up big numbers at both ends of the court for the Lions this winter. In 28 games this season, Jones led the AMCC in blocks (75), blocks per game (2.7), and defensive rebounds (189) while also being second in total rebounds (234) and rebounds per game (8.4), third in field goals made (182), steals (54), and points (484), fourth in points per 40 minutes (24.4) and free throws made (109), fifth in steals per game (1.9), seventh in field goal percentage (55.0), offensive rebounds (45), and points per game (17.3), 10th in free throw percentage (75.2), 11th in assists (70), and 13th in assists per game (2.5). During the season, Jones was named the AMCC Player of the Week on November 18.
Gentles started all 28 games for Penn State Altoona this season and was the top vote-getter among all first-year players in the conference. He ranks second in the AMCC in assists (121), third in assists per game (4.3) and offensive rebounds (53), fifth in free throws made (102), seventh in total rebounds (163), ninth in free throw percentage (76.7) and steals (42), 10th in defensive rebounds (110), 11th in steals per game (1.5), 12th in rebounds per game (5.8), 13th in field goals made (136), field goal percentage (50.4), blocks (12), and points (392), 15th in points per game (14.0), 16th in blocks per game (0.4), and 23rd in points per 40 minutes (18.6).
Penn State Altoona men’s basketball went 18-10 overall this season, including a 12-4 mark within the AMCC that placed the Lions third in the conference’s regular season standings. The team went on to reach the AMCC championship game this past weekend and finished as the conference runner-up.
